Bender Recap

This week, we get to recap a wedding that was truly the feather in our cap for our busy season this year. We’ve known Tiffany and Doug for years – funny fact, I (Mike) and my wife Jenny took Tiff and Melissa, Jenny’s sister (and one of the bridesmaids) out on Tiff’s 21st birthday a few years back. It was blizzarding in downtown Lancaster, and we were puttering around in this little Ford Focus. Hilarity. But! Anyway.

We met with Tiffany and Doug back earlier in the year to talk to them about what aesthetic they were striving for. Tiff said that she really wanted it to be fun, and laid back, but she knew that the crowd would be coming to party as they were going to have a lot of family and friends there. Their theme, in terms of colors and favors was ‘peacock’. We’d never heard of that before, it was a first for us – but let me tell you – the colors and the decorations were SO COOL. Blues, Teals, Purples, it was gorgeous, and we’ve never seen the Mariott’s main room look so awesome. Some of that had to do with our rockin’ uplighting – but we’ll get to that!

Tiff and Doug picked the Convention Center as their venue, which meant that their ceremony was going to be in one part of the main room, and then they were going to be using the dividers to section off the other side for the reception. Their ceremony was truly beautiful – they had not one, but two pastors, and they traded off the duties during the ceremony itself. Doug and Tiff looked so happy up there, it choked Eric and I up.

Once the ceremony let out, the guests mingled on the balcony of the Mariott’s third floor and had some drinks. They had selected this *quite killer* blue drink that Eric and I may or may not have sampled – it was THAT good. We’d picked some top-40 love songs that we thought might work well for Cocktail Hour and keep things upbeat.

After Cocktail hour, the guests filtered into the room and we made our announcements shortly thereafter. The evening really went off without a hitch; we had ample time for dancing and Tiff and Doug had time to talk to each of the tables, which they’d said was something that was really important to them. One thing that we always tell couples is that no matter how long they need to talk to people, we can always pad things out. You’re never *really* at the mercy of a timetable – this is your big day!

Another neat note about the decor was that they had a gobo and a light shining a custom pattern behind them. Eric and I have always resisted getting into this kind of thing because we worry that it detracts and dilutes our ability to give you an awesome soundtrack, but after seeing how pretty and elegant it made the room, we’ve been reconsidering.

Our absolute favorite moment was the last song – “Piano Man”, which they’d requested – without us even having to ask the crowd, they crowded in around Tiffany and Doug and made them the center of a big dance ring, where everyone was holding hands and singing along to the song. It was a heavy moment for Eric and I – we live for moments like that.

We can’t say enough what a great time we had celebrating the big day with Tiff and Doug; seeing them get married and to be able to provide the music was like helping family. At the time of this writing, they’re honeymooning in the Caribbean. JEALOUS! Congratulations, you two – we think you’re an awesome couple and hope to catch up once the dust settles!
