Nelson Recap

This past Saturday, we had the pleasure of helping provide the soundtrack and entertainment to the new Mr. Jake and Delena Nelson, and it was an awesome time! We met with Delena about a year ago and wanted to learn more about what kind of music and vibe she was going for with her reception, and I think we hit the nail on the head.

First, let’s talk about the venue – Jake and Delena had selected the Valencia Ballroom on North George St. in York, PA. To put it simply, it’s like stepping into a time machine! This is an old ballroom, and it’s been preserved in many important ways: the ticketing windows, the marquee, and the decorations inside the venue definitely give you the feeling that you’re in the 1940’s – in a good way. From floor to ceiling, the ballroom had a very unique feel that we’d not found anywhere else – if you’re into ‘retro’, or are looking for ‘retro-chic’ for an event, we’d definitely recommend checking it out!

For the cocktail hour, which took place up two large sweeping staircases to an upper level, we played mostly modern love songs that you would have heard on the radio within the past few years. We wanted the atmosphere to be calm and contemporary, and the room loved it.

This was taken a few moments before the introductions!

When it came time for the introductions, Delena is a fan of Beyonce, so we made the introductions to ‘Love on Top’ and ‘Crazy in Love’ which definitely set the tone for the rest of the evening. Delena and Jake wanted the wedding to be an intimate affair, and dinner was set to mostly newer country love songs while their guests chatted.

Kayley Nelson, their daughter (as well as the flower girl) also performed ‘Let it Go’ from Disney’s Frozen, and more than a few people loved it!

By the time we opened up the dance floor, people were ready to cut loose, and cut loose they did. We played music from all genres, all time periods, and took a fair share of requests throughout the rest of the night. We had a great time and really hope to bump into Jake and Delena sometime soon, either at a wedding or when we’re just out and about.

One of the cooler surprises of the evening was bumping into Casey and Chris Albright, who we DJed for a few months back. We couldn’t resist playing a little prank on them during the anniversary dance, since we knew exactly when they were married!
